All cognac is brandy, but not all brandy is cognac. Cognac is a specific protected designation — brandy made in the Cognac region of France using a controlled process. Other regions (South Africa, Spain, Italy) produce brandy outside that designation, often at comparable quality and lower price points.
Both are completely standard in Namibia. Brandy and Coke is the popular daily-drinker pattern — easy, refreshing, lets the brandy come through without being intense. Neat brandy is the slower, more contemplative end. Try both.
Brandy is stable for years if stored upright, cool, with the cap tight. Once half-empty it can slowly oxidise but the timeline is measured in years, not months. Drink it whenever — there's no rush.
Different profiles, both well-respected. KWV (especially the 5-year) is smoother and lighter — a touch more approachable. Richelieu has more body and a longer finish. Most Namibian households have both at different times. Pick whichever your family or friends grew up with.
