Charcoal is the standard Namibian braai fuel — gives a hotter, faster-burning fire than wood, with less smoke and more control. For a 4-6 person braai, a single bag of charcoal is usually enough; for 10+ people or a longer fire, get two bags. Firelighters are the practical way to start a charcoal fire — petroleum-based, light easily with a match, and burn long enough to get the charcoal going without paper or kindling. A pack of 12 firelighters covers multiple braais. If you want a fuller wood-smoke flavour, wood (when in stock) is the more traditional option — longer to start, slower to burn down, but the flavour from a wood fire is different from charcoal.
